Program Overview
The SoCal Youth Design Challenge is an exciting, hands-on, half-day workshop that brings together passionate Muslim high school leaders. Running from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, you’ll team up with peers to tackle meaningful, real-world challenges facing Muslim youth today β from creating more engaging community programs to inspiring civic action, and more!
Grounded in Islamic values and traditional wisdom, this day is all about empathy, teamwork, and creative problem-solving. Together, you’ll brainstorm fresh ideas, map out comic-strip storyboards, and pitch your team’s concept to a panel of judges for a chance to win prizes.
The challenge is run by Forerunners and hosted by the Islamic Center of Yorba Linda, in partnership with AMCF and the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California, and is sponsored by IRUSA.
What You’ll Learn
- Design Thinking & Values: Combine Islamic principles with human-centered problem solving
- Empathy Building: Create detailed student profiles to truly understand community needs
- Reframing Problems: Turn tough challenges into inspiring “How Might We” opportunities
- Rapid Brainstorming: Use quick exercises like “Crazy 8s” to generate big, creative ideas fast
- Visual Storyboarding: Sketch out 6β8 panel user journeys to bring concepts to life
- Confident Pitching: Craft a compelling 3-minute pitch (Problem β Solution β Impact)
What to Expect
- Team Collaboration: Work in small, energetic groups with sticky notes, markers, and whiteboards
- Real Community Impact: Design real solutions for issues directly affecting Muslim high schoolers
- Pitch Competition: Present to judges, answer Q&A, and get real-time feedback
- Food & Prayer: Breakfast snacks, lunch, and community Duhr salah
- Prizes & Takeaways: Celebrate with awards for top teams, group photos, and practical leadership skills
How to Apply
- Fill out the Application Form in its entirety
- Rolling admissions β applications reviewed as they come in, so apply early to secure your spot
- Priority acceptance begins 4 weeks before the event
- If selected, you’ll receive an acceptance email within 5β7 business days with payment details and a parent/guardian acknowledgement form
- Acknowledgement form and $35 payment due by September 1st at 11:59 PM
- If placed on the waitlist, you’ll be updated on your status
