By MUHSEN – Muslims Understanding & Helping Special Education Needs

Inclusive Muslim philanthropy begins with recognizing that true community impact means serving everyone—regardless of physical, developmental, or mental health differences. MUHSEN is a nonprofit dedicated to making Muslim spaces more inclusive by advocating for accessibility and directly supporting individuals and families affected by disabilities.

Why Accessibility Matters in Muslim Philanthropy

Disabilities affect 1 in 4 American adults. That includes over 600,000 Muslims living with disabilities in the U.S.—a number that continues to grow. Yet, many report feeling excluded from programs, mosques, and nonprofit services.

Inclusive Muslim philanthropy means shifting this reality. At MUHSEN, we help Muslim-led nonprofits, community foundations, and giving circles make their services accessible to all. We work from an individual-first mindset: instead of asking people to adapt, we adapt environments to meet diverse needs.

Supporting Nonprofits with Inclusive Services

Our Accessibility Service Certification helps organizations take concrete steps toward inclusion. Through audits, training, and low-cost adjustments, we support nonprofits in building welcoming spaces for all.

Services include:

  • ASL, Braille, & Closed Captioning
  • Support Groups with licensed counselors
  • Event Accessibility Guidelines
  • Disability-Awareness Training
  • Media Captioning Services

MUHSEN has partnered with the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding, Rabata, and Yaqeen Institute to elevate inclusion in their work. These efforts expand donor impact, ensure more equitable charitable giving, and reflect Islamic values in action.

Inclusive Giving is Faith-Based Giving

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“None of you will believe until you love for your brother what you love for yourself.”
(Sahih Bukhari and Muslim)

Inclusion is not a trend—it’s a prophetic tradition. And inclusive Muslim philanthropy isn’t just for disability advocacy groups. It’s for every masjid, endowment, DAF, and nonprofit striving to reflect the diversity of the ummah.

Even small accessibility improvements—like closed captions on videos or accessible entrances—create stronger, more inclusive communities. They also boost your organization’s reach, engagement, and effectiveness.

Let’s Build Inclusive Muslim Philanthropy Together

If you’re part of a Muslim nonprofit, manage a Donor Advised Fund, or lead a community foundation, MUHSEN can help you expand your impact by becoming more accessible.
