Allied Muslim Chamber of Business (AMCOB) recently featured Muhi Khwaja, co-founder of the American Muslim Community Foundation (AMCF), in their Member Spotlight series. In this engaging conversation, Muhi shared his inspiring journey in philanthropy, community-building, and empowering families and organizations to give more strategically.
From Community Roots to Philanthropic Leadership
Growing up in a vibrant Muslim community in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan, Muhi was surrounded by civic leaders and volunteers. This nurturing environment fueled his passion for service and leadership. His experiences planning community iftars, leading student organizations, and interning at the University of Michigan’s Development Summer Internship Program provided a solid foundation for his career in fundraising.
Muhi’s journey continued with impactful roles at organizations like the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding, the American Red Cross, and the University of Michigan. Through these experiences, he gained invaluable insights into fundraising best practices and donor engagement.
Founding AMCF: Bridging the Gap in Muslim Philanthropy
Recognizing the absence of donor-advised funds (DAFs) tailored to the Muslim community, Muhi co-founded AMCF to fill this gap. The foundation offers a unique platform for families, businesses, and non-profits to manage their charitable giving in a Sharia-compliant, socially responsible manner.
“I knew our non-profit institutions needed more sustainability,” Muhi emphasized. “Through DAFs and endowments, we provide a structured way for families to give strategically and for organizations to plan for long-term financial security.”
What is a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF)?
A DAF functions as a charitable savings account. Donors contribute funds, receive immediate tax benefits, and recommend grants to their favorite non-profits over time. With AMCF, donors have the flexibility to support both local and international causes, ensuring their contributions make a meaningful impact.
For businesses, DAFs offer an efficient way to fulfill corporate social responsibility goals. Whether it’s sponsoring local initiatives or contributing to global humanitarian efforts, companies can streamline their giving through AMCF.
Building Sustainable Futures Through Endowments
In addition to DAFs, AMCF manages endowments for non-profit organizations, providing expert investment management. With over 26 endowments under its care, AMCF ensures these funds grow over time, offering a reliable source of income to support charitable missions.
“Every organization, whether new or established, should consider starting an endowment,” Muhi advised. “Even a modest investment can make a significant long-term impact.”
Creating a Legacy of Giving
For families, AMCF provides a platform to build a legacy of generosity. Donors can establish funds in memory of loved ones, engage younger generations in philanthropy, and ensure their charitable goals are fulfilled for years to come.
“Every family should have a donor-advised fund,” Muhi encouraged. “It’s an opportunity to be intentional with your zakat and sadaqah, aligning your giving with your values.”
Join the Movement
AMCF has distributed over $23 million since its founding, with $2+ million distributed in Ramadan alone in 2025. The collective impact of donors coming together to support causes they care about is a testament to the power of community-driven philanthropy.
Whether you’re an individual, a business, or a non-profit organization, AMCF offers a pathway to maximize your charitable impact. Visit their website to learn more about establishing a donor-advised fund or endowment.
