Ramadan Letter

Ramadan Mubarak!

From our family to yours, Ramadan Mubarak on behalf of the American Muslim Community Foundation (AMCF). We pray that you and your loved ones have stayed healthy and safe during this unprecedented time. We are grateful for your support and commitment to AMCF’s vision to lead sustainable and strategic Muslim philanthropy for today and future generations.

Quick Update

Earlier this year, we announced a slight change to our name brand; from American Muslim Fund to American Muslim Community Foundation. We evolved our brand to better communicate the breadth of our commitment to advancing American Muslim philanthropy. As a community foundation, we will continue our mission to cultivate the donor giving ecosystem and diversify funding to advance the charitable causes that matter to you.

What We’ve Been Up To:

  • Over the last three years, AMCF has established and managed over 76 Donor Advised Funds and Giving Circles, distributing over $1.7 million to 150+ charities. It’s remarkable what can be accomplished when we work together on a shared vision for collective good. Here are some of our highlights to date…
  • During our first quarter of 2020, we’ve distributed over $300,000 to 70 charities; supporting initiatives for Black History, Women’s History, US Census, Covid-19 Response and many more. This year, we will continue to focus on causes that impact American-Muslims, while uplifting all minorities and marginalized communities working to promote social justice. We will keep these initiatives active for you to support throughout the year. Please review our initiatives here: http://bit.ly/amcf-cart
  • Hosted a series of webinars & events that you can watch on our website: https://amuslimcf.org/recorded-events.
  • For nonprofits, we are hosting 5 endowments and fiscally sponsoring 6 projects. You can learn more about partnering with us on our website: https://amuslimcf.org/partnerships
  • Launching the #MuslimPhilanthropy Podcast: https://amuslimcf.org/mppodcast. By listening, you can learn more about organized donor giving, nonprofit best practices, programs, services, and hear from the leaders in the field at over 365 organizations in our Nonprofit Directory: https://amuslimcf.org/funded.
  • Developed Muslim Philanthropic Values: In partnership with The Muslim Productive Company, leveraging their Barakah Culture Cards. You’ll receive a card set with a minimum monthly gift of $10 or by participating in a Donor Advised Fund or Giving Circle. This is a perfect way to discover what motivates your charitable giving and have a fun activity with friends or family to discuss the causes you love supporting: https://amuslimcf.org/mpvc
  •  Stay tuned for an exciting new initiative later in the year; launching our Nonprofit Ecosystem Accelerator. Applications will be announced on social media so be sure to follow us @amuslimcf. More information at https://amuslimcf.org/accelerator.

Our Commitment

We are eager to continue to strengthen and cultivate donor giving to further diversifying funding pathways for charitable causes. Our work is most imperative during this unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic affecting everyone; nonprofit organizations, families, and pretty much the entire charitable giving ecosystem in which we operate. The work of a community foundation and the function of Donor Advised Funds (DAF) have played a critical role during this pandemic because these are accounts setup with assets and cash already dedicated for charitable giving.

The Power of Collective Giving

Make a difference by strategically and collectively using your sadaqa and zakat in a meaningful way. Learn more about our COVID-19 Response Fund for Nonprofits, https://amuslimcf.org/covid-19. We’ve raised over $260,000 to support masjids and nonprofits across the country with our partners. You can start a DAF, or a Giving Circle to create further impact: https://amuslimcf.org/donors or text DAF to 71441.

Join us on our mission by making your contribution today here on LaunchGood, committing online: https://amuslimcf.org/donation or texting AMCF to 71441. When AMCF donates on your behalf, we represent Muslim charitable giving to the broader society and demonstrate our steadfast commitment to social justice. As an ally, donor, advocate, and more, your partnership strengthens our voice.

The one donation to rule them all; your Donor Advised Fund can do the rest!

MARCH 2020

New Name, Continued Commitment

We are evolving our brand to better communicate the breadth of our commitment to advancing American Muslim philanthropy.

A Community Foundation is a publicly supported philanthropic nonprofit institution governed by a board, which serves its donors, the nonprofit sector, and the community. Watch this video to learn more

The COVID-19 Response Fund for Nonprofits

In response to the Corona Virus & the impact it will have on the ability for nonprofit organizations to fundraise over the next few months, AMCF has created the COVID-19 Response Fund for Nonprofits to allocate funding to organizations impacted.

You can learn more and contribute on our LaunchGood campaign. Should there be a stimulus check sent out, and you are not in need of the funds, this is a perfect way to pay it forward to help those in need.

Women’s History Month Initiative

In honor of Women’s History Month, AMCF selected 15 organizations from our Nonprofit Directory to support.

Browse through the causes and donate directly to the causes of your choice.

Extended Deadlines for Census Outreach

& Starting Endowments Grants

Since the original deadlines aligned with the Corona Virus outbreak receiving media attention and with the CDC’s restriction on public events, many nonprofits were focused on internal policies and updates. To alleviate the pressure, AMCF decided to extend the deadline to Sunday March 29, 2020

We hope that the additional two weeks allows for nonprofits to focus their attention on their operations and provides enough time to apply for the grant opportunity.

Find out more about the Request for Proposals on our Grants site.

Host AMCF online

Invite AMCF to your community via your living room! We rely on the generosity of our donors and allies to promote our work. If you’ve benefited in any way, help introduce us to others in your network. Whether you are a nonprofit receiving funds or setting up an endowment, a family participating in a Giving Circle or donating through a Donor Advised Fund, or someone who just wants to represent Muslim philanthropy in a more strategic way, we would love to talk with you.

All of our previously scheduled events for Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., New York, New Jersey, California, Michigan, and Texas have been updated as webinars or postponed. You can still sign up and find out more on our events page. This will result in hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost revenue to nonprofit organizations. We hope you can help host a webinar with your friends to learn how you can make a difference.

Connect with us so you can make the most of your Ramadan giving.

#MuslimsCount2020 – Census & Past Events

AMCF is excited to partner with nonprofits across the country along with the U.S. Census Bureau nationally to focus on Muslim participation with the Census. We are encouraging the Muslim community across the country to fill out the Census on Friday April 3, 2020. Help spread us the word for #MuslimsCount2020 online. Visit MyCensus2020.gov to fill it out.

Also of note are our Recorded Events, most recently a Census 101 for Mosque Leaders.

AMF was honored to receive the Outstanding Foundation Award for 2019 from the Association of Fundraising Professionals. In his acceptance speech, co-founder Muhi Khwaja said:

Social justice and human rights issues never seem to stop, but my hope is that together through our collective philanthropy we can make a difference…We are honored that AFP sees through the political and divisive rhetoric. Some of the most famous modern-day Muslims are my heroes like Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X all the way to Congresswomen Ilhan Omar & Rashida Tlaib.”

Are You or a Loved One Over 70.5 Years Old?*

Many of our community members are fortunate to have Individual Retirement Accounts provided to us by our employers. Did you know that when one becomes 70.5 years old, you’ll need to take a required minimum distribution (RMD)?

The RMD for each year is calculated by dividing the IRA account balance as of December 31 of the prior year by the applicable distribution period or life expectancy. At this age, you’re also allowed to make a Qualified Charitable Deduction (QCD) of up to $100,000 a year from your IRA balance without penalty.

This may be a convenient way to setup an ongoing charitable gift (sadaqa jariya) as an endowment to benefit some of your favorite charities or simply create a Donor Advised Fund in memory of a loved one or your family.

Visiting Chicago in December

Will you be in Chicago the weekend of Friday December 13 thru Sunday December 15? We’d love to see you! American Muslim Fund is hosting a few private gatherings. If you’re interested in learning more about our work, reach out to set a time to grab coffee or join us for lunch or dinner.

Bring American Muslim Fund out to your community to learn more about how you can start an endowment, donor advised fund, giving circle or get fiscally sponsored! We’d love to teach a 2 day fundraising class for your board or the community at large (in partnership with Indiana University & the Center on Muslim Philanthropy).

Our Collective Progress

Over the last three years, American Muslim Fund has been able to work with more than 53 Donor Advised Funds and Giving Circles to distribute over $1,200,000 to over 120 charities. Gift to donors

If you donated $100 or more to AMCF this year, we are mailing you a copy of Ghalib Victor Begg’s memoir, Our Muslim Neighbors, next week! Thank you to everyone who participated in helping us raise more than $50,000 in Ramadan.

Your support means so much to us and a gift of any amount is always appreciated. A special shout out to our monthly donors who keep AMCF sustainable!

Giving Circles

A Giving Circle is a form of philanthropy where groups of individuals donate their own time & money to a pooled fund, deciding together which nonprofit or community project to fund.

If you play in a Fantasy Football league, consider having the participants pitch in ‘for a cause’ and allocate funding to AMCF. At the end of the season, your league champ can select a charity of their choice! Join the movement by contacting us today about Fantasty Football 4 A Cause.

JULY 2019

Award & Recognition

The Association of Fundraising Professionals Golden Gate Chapter has named the American Muslim Community Foundation ‘Outstanding Foundation for 2019’! This award recognizes a private or community foundation or grantmaking organization that provides financial support and inspiration to nonprofit and grantmakers – and develops innovative approaches to philanthropy.

We’re absolutely honored to be recognized and will accept the award on National Philanthropy Day, Friday November 15. Tickets to attend can be purchased online.

Muslim Entrepreneurs for Social Good

American Muslim Community Foundation was a proud participant of the American Muslim Consumer Consortium – AMCC Roundtable event held on June 27th at The Cornell Club in New York. Muslim entrepreneurs, nonprofits, and businesses came together to discuss the social needs of North America and the wider world and how we can bring together change through positive social impact.

The information gathered during the breakout sessions will be used to develop a Five-Year Strategic Roadmap-An Entrepreneurial Ecosystem for Muslim Entrepreneurs for Social Good. It was a groundbreaking event with inspiring participants from across the world.

Ramadan update

Thank you to everyone who donated to our Ramadan campaign. Together we raised $50,731 of our $75,000 goal. Through the end of the year, we hope you can help us fill the gap. Please consider becoming a monthly donor.

As promised, we will be sending Victor Begg’s memoir, Our Muslim Neighbors, to those who donated $100+. If you’d like a copy of his book, please donate today!

American Muslim Philanthropy Report

American Muslim Community Foundation sponsored the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding’s report on American Muslim Philanthropy which uncovers American Muslims’ philanthropic practices and motivations. Given the centrality of giving among Muslim communities and the important role religious giving plays in philanthropy more broadly, in this report ISPU takes a deep dive into how and why American Muslims give. Learn more in the report!

Giving Circles

A Giving Circle is a form of philanthropy where groups of individuals donate their own time & money to a pooled fund, deciding together which nonprofit or community project to fund.

American Muslim Community Foundation was the recipient of a micro-grant from the Giving Circle Convening held at the Gates Foundation and Seattle Foundation earlier this year. If you are interested in starting a Giving Circle in your community, reach out!
